The Royal Voluntary Service now runs three services which cover most of Barnsley, funded by the Central and North Area Councils and The Peoples Health Trust.
The services are aimed at supporting lonely and isolated older people over 60 within the Barnsley area.

Following referral, our Inclusion Officers will visit older people in their homes.

The role of the Inclusion Officers is two-fold; to seek to pull together a package of support which will help the older person to find a way out of loneliness and isolation, and to offer advice and signposting around other sources of help such as benefits entitlement, aids and adaptations etc. A key component of the service involves volunteers delivering the sorts of caring interventions which will see vulnerable older people being integrated back into their communities. Their discussions will substantially be led by the older person themselves and will be used to put together a package of support aimed at reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

In addition as part of this conversation people will be invited to agree personal goals which they may want to see within a defined period of time. For example for someone who never leaves their house a three month goal might be to walk to the end of the garden with a volunteer and a six month goal to get out the shops with a volunteer. The overarching objectives are to agree interventions with the service users which will lead to their social integration and inclusion and so remove the need for our service's intervention.

We realise there is already a well-established network of local services. Our aim is not to try and replace them and we cannot provide every service people may require so an important part of the Inclusion Officers role is to signpost on to other agencies that may be better placed to offer support.

If you would like to refer someone to the service or would like to find out more please contact us on 01226 705954 or by email barnsleyloop@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk
